 | Mt Atkinson - View from the Top | | | Event Type: Exhibitions, Older Adults, Fitness | | | |
 | Wednesday, 17 March 2010 | | | from 1:00 p.m. | | | | | Step outside and be inspired by the art of nature. Just a stone's throw from Titirangi is a little known treasure - Mt Atkinson.
From the summit you can see across the city to Rangitoto Island and byond to Coromandel; turn to the right and you're drawn out over the vast Manukau Harbour with its ever-changing tides and colours; turn again and take in the bush-clad Waitakere Ranges that sweep down into the plains of West Auckland.
It's from this hilltop that Colin McCahon sketched the small pen and ink work, North from Mt Atkinson in 1957. Lopdell House Gallery is delighted to have this historic example of en plein air (art term used to describe painting or sektching outdoors - literally "in the open air") by one of New Zealand's most revered painters in its collection.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the acquisition of this art work and the launch of our View from the Top walking brochure. The walk is a short 300m stroll along Kohu Road then a five minute stroll through the bush to the summit of Mt Atkinson. Vehicle access is via Kohu Road and into The Drive, where car parking is available.
Meet at the Gallery at 1.00 pm.
